CARAVAN REGO
WORDS: MAX TAYLOR
THE COST TO REGISTER A CARAVAN IN AUSTRALIA VARIES
WILDLY FROM STATE TO STATE. LET’S BREAK IT DOWN.
If you own a caravan in any state other than
Victoria, you’ve no-doubt fumed at the
expense or scratched your head trying to
work it all out. In some states, it costs more to
register a van than it does to register a 4WD
elsewhere. Other states, meanwhile, will base
rego fees on the weight of the van.
Here we have broken down the cost to renew
caravan registration for 12 months (for private
use) in the individual Australian states and
territories. Registering a van for the first time

will, naturally, occur additional fees, as will
transferring the registration to a new owner.
Most states offer discounts for concession
card holders, and will allow a van owner to pay
for three or six-month registration, too. While
paying it this way will lessen the short-term
wallet pain, in all cases it works out cheaper to
fork out for the full 12 months.
But what we can all agree on, I think, is that
Australia has a ridiculously inconsistent and
broadly expensive system of caravan registration.
