HITCHING UP WITH MAX TAYLOR
ON REFLECTION
Some things in life are unavoidable. When it comes
to caravanning, a few come to mind, some more
controversial than others. A suitable tow vehicle, sure
– we all know that’s important. A 12V coffee machine,
well, some would say that’s a necessity.
Yes, as with everything, the RV lifestyle has its points
of contention. D-shackles, anyone? Let’s not open that
can of worms just now.
Instead, let’s talk about tow mirrors. Whether or not
they’re a non-negotiable part of caravanning has always
been a subject of debate. “Nah, my standard mirrors
are fine – I can see down the side of my van well
enough,” is something we’ve all heard before.
Now, I’m just as guilty as the next person of
neglecting to fit them from time to time – but I’ve
resolved to do better. Police are wising up on this issue
and issuing fines to non-compliant caravanners, but –
much more importantly – a driver’s ability to see what’s
in front and behind is a major safety consideration.
The fact is, a driver is required to have a certain field
of rearward vision, defined in the Australian Design
Rules. If the van is even slightly wider than the tow
vehicle – as almost all are – it’s a safe bet the vehicle’s
standard mirrors won’t cut the mustard.
It’s worth reflecting on this, for the safety of you
and others.
