LETTERS FROM THE ROAD
LIGHT ’N’ EASY
The article on lightweight towing (GoRV #15)
really resonated with me. Over the years I
have had quite a few caravans but now we
have settled on a Jayco Freedom pop-top
17ft 6in long. What is special is that, although
a tandem undercarriage model, it has air-
conditioning, hot water, a shower/toilet,
microwave, TV, etc., in fact all that most
people need. The Tare weight is 1509kg and
ATM 1909kg. The ball weight, as measured
with two 9kg full gas cylinders is 130kg.
I tow with a 2011 Kia Sorento 2.2L diesel
and, from Brisbane to Wyndham via the
Gulf and Darwin (and return), the fuel
consumption was 12.2L/100km. Brisbane
to Noccundra yielded the same consumption
and this is travelling generally around 90-
95km/h. Occasionally 110km/h is used on
the freeways. I get ‘bowser envy’ when filling
up from owners of the big monsters.
You can see that I am really happy with the
lightweight option.

REGO CUT
On Thursday, just before your latest issue
arrived, I took a phone call from Thomas
George, my local MP for the seat of Lismore,
NSW. I have been petitioning Thomas
for several years on the issue of caravan
registration costs and he rang to invite me to
join him for an announcement by the NSW
minister for roads about caravan registration
costs. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend as I
had another engagement in Brisbane.
In the announcement, NSW motor vehicle
tax for privately owned caravans and camper
trailers will reduce by 40 per cent from
November 1 2018.
This is a welcome move that will save me
around $160 per year but it will still cost over
$320 to register my Jayco 16ft caravan.

Thanks for your email, Peter. We received word
on this cut to caravan rego in New South Wales
shortly after publishing our last issue. See page
50 for the Australian Caravan Club’s reaction to
this welcome news. – Ed

I LAUGHED SO MUCH
I just have to say I have just listened for the first
time to one of your podcasts (Rambling On).
I laughed so much… thank you! I will definitely
go back and listen to all the previous ones.
Keep up the good work!
