VEHICLE SECURITY

KEYS

We keep a spare set of car keys in our caravan and a spare set of caravan keys in our car. The relatively new Camec keyless entry system, which allows the van owner to wear a wristband specifically coded to their van’ s lock rather than carry keys, and have them potentially stolen, seems like a good way to further improve security.

EQUIPMENT LOCKS

‘ Portable’ items like generators and solar panels can be tempting for thieves. You can just do what we did initially: purchase a security cable and a waterproof lock. Of course, any thief can bypass this, given a portable angle grinder and enough time, so what you are really doing is hoping that they will find easier pickings.

Then we discovered alarmed locks, like the ones made by Kovix. As they say, locks only discourage honest thieves, but there’ s little doubt that ones that create a fuss will probably send most thieves elsewhere.

COUPLING LOCKS AND WHEEL CLAMPS

There is a large range of coupling locks on the market to suit 50mm ball, pin and other systems, but Kovix and others also make alarmed coupling locks. It should go without saying, but also invest in a quality wheel clamp for your van.
