In other words, it’s impossible to load the Cruiser
to its GCM without exceeding the GVM, unless
the trailer has no ball weight. The GVM upgrade
eliminates the problem and allows you to reclaim
that ‘lost’ towball weight.
GVM upgrades are available for most of the
popular tow vehicles; however, I do not believe
there is an upgrade kit currently available in
Australia for the Y62 Patrol.
It’s important to note that due to the limited GCM
of many of these vehicles, a GVM upgrade will be
of little benefit and may further limit the loaded
weight of the trailer that your vehicle can legally
tow, assuming the vehicle is loaded to its full
GVM. Proceed carefully.
If you have any doubt or difficulty figuring out
the weight limits of your rig, go directly to your
manufacturer, a professional vehicle weighing
service, or get down to a safety inspection event
run by one of the various caravanning industry
organisations. Only then will have reliable
information specific to your tow vehicle and caravan
as well as advice on what to do to get legal.
