RV FEATURE
The main attraction is an original B52 bomber that
flew with the United States Air Force. The story
of how this plane came to be in the possession
of the City of Darwin is extraordinary and being
able to get up close and person with such a huge
aircraft is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Litchfield National Park: About an hour and a
half drive south of Darwin, this world-renowned
park offers visitors some of the most spectacular
landscapes in the country. The waterholes are
flanked by magnificent towering cliff-faces and
fed by cascading waterfalls. Being fresh water,
you can swim safe from predatory saltwater
crocodiles. The area is teeming with birdlife and
the plants and trees in the bush areas come to life
during the wet season.
Some places may be inaccessible, especially
where 4WDs are normally required, but the rest
of the park is serviced by sealed roads which
should be passable most of the time.
Darwin Wave Pool: Situated virtually in the
centre of the city, the Darwin Wave Pool is an
extraordinary feat of engineering. The pool is
large and the waves it is capable of generating
have to be seen to be believed. It has an artificial
beach section so the younger kids can enjoy the
waves in safety.
Given that you can't go swimming at any of the
natural beaches in the Northern Territory without
risking a stinger, a shark or a croc, the wave pool
is a brilliant alternative.
Darwin Harbour Cruises: If you're looking for a
quiet and romantic way to spend an evening,
you cannot miss out on a boat cruise on Darwin
Harbour. There are a number of operators but our
favourite was aboard the Cape Adieu Harbour
Cruise. This magnificent old fishing boat, now
operated by professional fisherman, has been
converted into a floating restaurant and offers
fine seafood dining with some of the best views
in the country.
There's something very special about Darwin,
especially during the Christmas period and the
build-up to the wet season. If you don't mind a bit
of heat and humidity, avoid the crowds and come
and enjoy Australia's most northerly capital city.
You will not be disappointed.
