LETTERS FROM THE ROAD
COLD CALL
I suppose I’m getting old, but I go a long way back
and can clearly remember the days when we had
ice boxes. Then, of course, in the 1960s we had
the advent of a refrigerator in the caravan that
operated on 240V or gas. There was no such thing
as a three-way refrigerator; from memory, these
didn’t occur until the 1990s.
So what did we all do in those years? Yes we
put the refrigerator on 240V for a couple of
days before going away, and then, of course,
ran gas while we travelled. I don’t think we
were different to any other caravaners at the
time – we all did it – and how many caravans
blew up? If it was normal for at least 20 to 30
years, what changed?

BOUQUETS FOR KERSHAW CLOSURE
I think that the closure of the Kershaw Gardens
free camping site in Rockhampton, Qld, was a
great move. It was costing already-stretched
ratepayers to keep it running and open.
Unfortunately for those who did the right thing,
it was also being abused by those who had no
respect for what was being offered.
There should have been a maintenance fee paid
as it is with National Parks, and that way those
who used it may have had some respect for other
community services.
No, I am not totally against it (freedom camping)
but Rockhampton ratepayers should not be
subsidising the facility.

BRICKBATS FOR KERSHAW CLOSURE
We were in Rockhampton, Qld, last year and
spent two weeks there. We did not stay at that
free camp (Kerhsaw Gardens) though we did go
into the gardens.
We saw the caravans in there and it looked like a
great park. We spent over $2000 in park fees, car
repairs, food and seeing all that Rockhampton
had to offer. Not happy.
