RV OPINION
BY THE
NUMBERS
We asked the Caravan Industry Association of
Australia why the holiday park industry was so
important, not just to the happiness of Australian
travellers but to the health of the country overall.
These figures tell an eye-opening story…
• Direct caravan park revenue contributes
about $3 billion to the Australian economy
each year. This is in addition to visitor
expenditure of all caravan and campers,
which amounts to about $8.6 billion
annually. The overall caravan industry is
estimated to be worth $20 billion to the
Australian economy each year, according
to Tourism Research Australia.

• For the 12 months to September 2018
(the most recent data from Tourism
Research Australia), there were 54.8
million nights spent RVing or camping
by Australians in Australia, and in total
there were 12.6 million caravan/camping
trips taken by Australians in Australia.
• Thirty to 54-year-olds represent the largest
caravan and camping demographic, taking
5.9 million trips in this 12-month period,
but the most recent data suggests that
the largest growth was in 20-29-year-
old age bracket, which increased by
16 per cent to 2.2 million trips.
