SNAKE-BITE BANDAGE
I have just read the snake bite article (GoRV
#23) and thought you may be interested to
know about the new snake-bite bandage on
the market.
The bandage comes with a rectangle
imprinted along its entire length.
When you apply the bandage, you
tension it so that the rectangle forms a
square. This gives the correct pressure
to apply. Keep it going like this all the way
up and down the affected limb.
Also, make sure you mark the location of
the bite on the outside of the bandage. This
way, emergency services will only have to lift
the bandage at the bite without releasing the
tension of the entire bandage.
These bandages are available at all good first
aid suppliers and cost around $10 to $12.
I reckon they should be a part of everybody’s
first aid kit. They’re a pretty good investment,
really.
Oh, and the other bit of advice: if you think you
or someone has been bitten, play it safe and
bandage the affected limb immediately – don’t
wait for symptoms to show, as it will be too
late by then. And call emergency services
straight away.
Ambos have told me they would rather come
out and make sure all is okay than have to try
to save a life when it’s probably too late.
