LETTERS FROM THE ROAD
ROLLOVER ‘RUBBISH’ POOR WORKMANSHIP
Fact: when you get the ‘death sway’ up, you gun
the throttle to pull the van straight. (The people
who owned the van in the picture) probably
loaded the van incorrectly for this to happen in
the first place. Am I the only person I know that
has driven out of the ‘death sway’ because I have
common sense? Marg Allen
What a load of rubbish, (that) picture of an
overturned van on a straight (Why Caravans Roll
Over, GoRV #25) and your reasoning shows a
bend in the road. Are people really this stupid?
Also, that rolled van had just declined a hill so
he was riding his brakes to slow the van down,
making the situation worse. This is when a V8
come into play to save the day.

Where is the comment in the caravan rollover
article (GoRV #25) about poor or substandard,
or indeed illegal, workmanship in building the
van? It is not always about the driver.

Thanks for your letter, Marg. I agree: a poorly built
or balanced caravan may be more susceptible to
sway. The article in question set out to explain
the physics behind a caravan rollover, i.e., that
a rollover occurs when a van is triggered into
oversteer, particularly at speed. That’s not to say
a shoddy van would be safe to tow. – Ed
PRICY PARKS
My wife and I are travelling around Victoria and are
a little surprised at the price for a powered site at
a lot of parks compared to other parks around the
country. I wonder if these park owners realise that
most of us use WikiCamps and Camps Australia
Wide, and bypass the pricey parks, especially in
the off season
