A CRACKDOWN IS COMING
MANAGING EDITOR
As I write, RV manufacturers and importers around the
country are coming to grips with what is required of them
under the Road Vehicle Standards Act, which was passed
by federal parliament in late 2018.

In December, the RVSA will replace the Motor Vehicle
Standards Act, the regulatory framework governing
vehicle compliance in Australia since 1989.

The MVSA was in desperate need of an overhaul. And
many others in the RV community agree. It certainly
didn’t reflect the needs of today’s manufacturers, or the
expectations of the RVing public.

The self-certification system, which gave manufacturers
or importers the ability to declare their products fit for
purpose, with no other government oversight required,
only encouraged bad actors to make a quid at the expense
of unsuspecting buyers.

Now, we are on the cusp of a system that should well and
truly clean up the RV industry. The cowboys have been
put on notice.
The introduction of a Register of Approved Vehicles,
involving an approvals system for each RV model, should
see significant improvement in compliance rates, while
acting as a ‘barrier to entry’ to fly-by-nighters or anyone
else with an air-compressor and nail gun who thinks they
can slap together a van and make a killing.
Stay tuned: as December nears, there will be more news
to report. Until then.
Safe travels.
