KINGS CANYON (MORRIS
PASS LOOKOUT) FAST FACTS
Kings Canyon was originally a crack in the
Mereenie sandstone, deepened and widened by
20 million years of wind, rain and floodwaters. • Camping is permissible at the lookout for a
24-hour period and no permits are required.
As well as enjoying the views of the south wall,
you’ll come across The Lost City, Cotterill’s
Lookout, the Garden of Eden and the mottled
north wall before climbing back down to the valley
floor. You can also enjoy jaw-dropping views of
Kings Canyon on the 2.6km Kings Creek walk and
the 4.8km South Wall return walk. • Caravans are suited to the upper level.
The natural wonder of Kings Canyon makes it a
huge tourist drawcard. That’s why tackling the
6km Rim Walk is best done early so you beat the
tour buses. Once you’ve survived ‘Heart Attack
Hill’, the rest of the walk is a doddle.
• Morris Pass Lookout is about 42km north-
west of Kings Canyon on Larapinta Drive.
The road is bitumen up to the lookout before
turning to gravel if you decide to tackle the
Mereenie Loop (a permit is required to drive
this route).
• There are no facilities.
• The lookout offers panoramic views and is the
perfect sunset spot.
• BYO wood.
• Leave only footprints and take only photos.
Kathleen Springs is 21km from Kings Canyon
where you’ll see the remnants of stockyards
before reaching the permanent waterhole. The
waterhole was a favoured hunting place for the
local Aboriginals, so swimming isn’t allowed.
