“We feel the kids are very restricted and not really
able to act like children in most caravan parks.
“I do feel like we have to constantly follow the
kids around to tell them to not run, yell, don’t walk
there, watch out for that car, etc. – some people
drive too fast and some seem to intentionally try
to scare the kids.
“On the flip side, we have met some very lovely
people at caravan parks, some of whom are
childless. When we were sick in Kununurra, we
had a lady offer to look after the kids if that would
help us. We have also met some who treat our
kids as they would their own grandchildren.
“We come across a lot more travelling families
in caravan parks as opposed to low-cost/free-
camping areas, and caravan parks such as the
Big 4s are definitely more ‘kid-friendly’ with
jumping pillows and the like – but then we have
had incidents with our kids being bullied or not
getting a turn.
“The only tactics we employ are to not often let
the kids go off alone; or if they do, they take a
two-way radio so we can check-in regularly. Our
12-year-old is very mature and able to help keep
an eye on the younger ones.”
