Gross Combined Mass, confusing the masses
for decades.

On the face of it, it’s not that complicated. A loaded
trailer weighs something. A loaded vehicle weighs
something. Combine the two and there you have it, the
combined weight of the entire rig – right? But that, I’m
afraid, is the definition of oversimplification.

The consequences of getting it wrong, a little oversight
that anyone could make, could be disastrous,
especially in the event of an accident.

Making the matter more difficult is the fact that there
seems to be no rhyme or reason behind how vehicle
manufacturers set the GCM of their vehicles. As Marty
Ledwich points out in this issue, logic suggests GCM
should be the tow vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Mass plus its
maximum braked towing capacity.
Sure, some manufacturers do it this way. And in a
perfect world, the Ford Rangers of the world would
be the same. We’d have ample payload capacity
available in our tow vehicles after hitching our 3500kg
vans and we could focus on enjoying our travels.
But since perfection only exists on a job application
form, we all have to do the sums. Hopefully, this issues
helps to clarify the dreaded GCM issue for you. We
have been through it, around it and under it. The rest is
up to you.
