RV FEATURE
The awning leg, well, what was left of it, was
dragging along the road, having lost some
vital component that kept it not only attached
to the van but in a collapsed state. As the awning had been checked as secure
two days prior when we had rolled the
awning in to keep it safe from the storm, we
hadn’t checked it when doing our final checks.
We pulled over, and took stock of the
situation. We also emptied the back drawers
in the car of all our 100-mile-an-hour tape
and got to work. We rolled up the awning and
taped it closed. We taped up the leg to keep
the extension bit closed, and we taped it all to
the van. That thing was not moving. CIL Insurance advised us to cut the awning off
as it was deemed unsafe. The assessor came
to the van, as did the repairer. The hatch and
the new awning were replaced within two
weeks, and we could continue our journey.
A HAPPY ENDING
It turned out that the branch that had speared
our hatch, and we found lying on the ground
next to the van, had also broken the latch
that holds the awning arm and leg to the van,
at the top and the bottom. We didn’t notice
because the leg and awning was attached to
the van when we hitched up.
