TIME TO ROCK
Now to Plan C. I had wheel pathways,
MaxTrax and whatever pebbles I could
scavenge in front of and/or behind all eight
wheels on my rig. So now it was time to
rock!
If only Michael had heeded
the advice on this sign!
By ‘rock’ I mean the non-recommendable
rocking of the tow car backwards and
forwards by shifting as quickly as possible
between Reverse and Drive, each time re-
adjusting the MaxTrax as the wheel grooves
became longer.
I tried for about 15 minutes and had just
about given up (my wife gave up 15 minutes
earlier with a helpful ‘this will never work –
we’re stuck!’) when the Land Cruiser’s wheels
suddenly found some grip and we inched
outwards onto solid ground.
Then, as of course would happen, a trio of Series
2 Land-Rover Discoverys arrived in the opposite
direction, armed to the teeth with winches,
snatch straps and loads of other recovery gear
that would have had us out in five minutes had
they arrived a little earlier!
The take-away from this exercise: don’t travel
alone in potentially dodgy, low trafficked
remote areas. At least fit something you can
haul forward from.
It was all humbling and frustrating at the time,
but I am a better traveller for having gone
through the mental and physical exercise.
