RV FEATURE
CARAVAN SKID TEST!
CARAVANS GET ABS
A collaboration between Al-Ko, Dexter and
Bosch has lead to a new safety feature for
caravans: TowAssist Anti-Lock Braking.
This technology was launched at Melbourne
Leisurefest in early October and will be
available for van manufacturers to fit in 2020.
I was one of the first to experience the new
TowAssist feature, taking part in one of the
demonstrations on the racetrack at Sandown
Racecourse. The driver planted the brake
and we came to a quick, safe stop. I noticed
the van’s brake’s ‘pulse’ slightly, as expected,
but the van felt completely controlled in this
braking scenario.
“Bringing ABS technology to caravans
and trailers in Australia is long overdue
and has been eagerly awaited by both the
public and manufacturers,” Al-Ko Australia
and New Zealand managing director Peter
Mannfolk said.

Tow Assist also provides mileage tracking with
a built-in odometer function and can “perform
critical maintenance at precise intervals all
while keeping track of your trailer”.
“Revolutionising the towing experience
with electric ABS brakes, Dexter Tow Assist
provides trailer anti-lock braking, utilising the
most performance out of each trailer brake
while reducing the risk of tyre skid or lock-
up and improving manoeuvrability to avoid
obstacles,” Mr Mannfolk said.
Al-Ko says that the TowAssist technology will
be first rolled out to caravan manufacturers
before eventually being available for
aftermarket fitment to caravans.
