LETTERS FROM THE ROAD
BACK TO BASICS FUEL CONSUMPTION
I have read many articles about this magical
3500kg tow weight. How many vehicles can
not legally tow this, with a few accessories
fitted? Why has this become the ‘magic’ figure? We find the best way to save fuel (GoRV #29)
is too park up our Roadstar caravan in a nice
spot and stay for a while. Safe travels to all.
Years ago, we towed many vans that were so
much lighter, and made do. Have we created
a monster by all those must-haves?
Maybe if we just dropped back to a more
realistic figure of 3000Kg this might stop all
that panic about being overloaded and if my
ball weight is okay.
It might even raise the tow speeds up closer
to the speed limits and reduce the angst that
some drivers cause.
It seems simple to me. Lower the weight and
go back to enjoying a more basic experience.
Bells and whistles do not always make it a
better camping/holiday experience.

Thanks for your letter, David. I appreciate
your sentiments concerning a more ‘basic’
camping/holiday experience. The living space,
bells and whistles are great, but my fondest
memories of camping as a kid involved a six-
person tent and sleeping bags on the floor
(without an air mattress!). – Ed

KIDS IN PARKS
I note with interest the discussion regarding
children in caravan parks (GoRV #29). Yes,
there are noisy kids but then there are also
some really lovely children.
The difference is the parents, those who just
want them to go away and let them get some
peace and quiet, and those who are involved
with their children and spend time with them.
The difference is huge.
Let us not brand all children as brats. As for
walking through sites (my pet hate), the worst
offenders are lazy adults! If you must walk
through someone’s site, please check with the
current siteholders that this is okay.
A little courtesy goes a long way in making a
pleasant stay for everyone.
