My previous 4WD was a petrol-guzzling 4.5L
80 Series Land Cruiser. Despite its mechanical
problems, peeling paint and penchant for drinking a
lot of unleaded, I loved that old thing. SALES DIRECTOR
I was never quite brave enough, however, to seriously
measure how much petrol it would use when I was
towing a caravan. Ashley Manson - 0438 051 354

Nor was I brave enough to measure its petrol consumption
when towing my much-lighter camper trailer. I simply
accepted the fact that it was a thirsty beast.

My latest vehicle, with its 3L turbodiesel engine, is a
different story. And so I started thinking. The old myth
is that pop-tops are cheaper to tow than comparable
caravans as they offer less wind resistance.
No longer too nervous to measure my vehicle’s fuel
consumption, I set-up an experiment to test this
theory. It involved many hours of driving the same
route and many tanks of fuel, not to mention the
welcome assistance of Goldstream RV.
I know every van/vehicle combo is different but
I believe my results, published in this issue, are
instructive. I hope you find them useful.
As I write, we’re on the cusp of Christmas. I’m off to
sip scotch on ice under the stars a long way from
home. Wherever you are, we at GoRV wish you a safe
and very happy festive season.
