MAINTENANCE
“There are additional benefits in that you get
twice the oil volume and surface area with
which to handle the heat generated, with
some redundancy.
“They work very hard on a single-axle trailer
seeing axle loads of 2.5 tonnes. Compare this
to the Land Cruiser towing it that is 2.5 tonnes
on two axles.
“As time went on, this seemed to become the
standard for ourselves and those who
followed. However, when we designed ATX,
we started fresh and found that we could
handle the damping requirement by using a
single monotube shock absorber. Due to its
design, the heat is handled more efficiently
and the larger piston can control the spring
and body control requirements.”
Periodic inspections and regular servicing
should ensure that a quality independent coil
suspension system provides years of faithful
service, while meeting all necessary safety
standards and ride performance.
A visual inspection, checking for cracks and
weld failures, can easily be done by the
owner. Other maintenance jobs include:
inspecting shock absorbers for oil leaks;
checking the coils for sagging; performing
torque checks of all bolts, including wheel
nuts; inspecting for wear or damage of wheel
bearings; inspecting tyre wear and pressure;
keeping the bushes greased; and testing
brakes and adjusting if necessary.
Obviously, these are not jobs that everyone
would be confident or capable of doing —
always see a specialist.
Regular servicing should ensure years of
faithful performance from a quality setup.
