ISUZU D-MAX X-TERRAIN
The all-new D-MAX has just arrived and everyone is keen to see how this new towhauler fares .
The D-MAX is a big step forward on its predecessor in its safety and convenience technology and design – although you might say that isn ’ t too hard on all counts .
Nonetheless , it still has many features that endeared us to the previous model when it comes to towing heavy caravans .
For example , while the ‘ new ’ 3L has a small bump in power and torque , it feels much like the old one when towing or not . It is still quite a vocal diesel engine , although fuel consumption with a 2900kg caravan behind is about what you ’ d expect from the old model – around 17L / 100km on our test .
The D-MAX doesn ’ t feel like it is working hard overall when towing such a mass , but it is affected by steep hill climbs – again , much like its predecessor .
This ute ( like the Ranger and others ) can ’ t be loaded to its GVM with a 3500kg van behind it . There ’ s 650kg to shed before it would be within its GCM of 5950kg .
Having said that , the new D-MAX feels more settled on-road than before , with more direct steering and a more refined ride , but when towing it isn ’ t a completely resolved set-up .
The new model could do with a little more composure , at least with the van we towed behind it , and ride quality when towing is a little affected by pitching too . All in all , however , it is a good towing platform .
