JERRY CANS AND WATER TANKS
I added two ARK jerry can holders to the back bar of my caravan . I soon realised that as I was using the lighter weight plastic jerry cans , which are much taller than the metal ones , the amount of the top bar that slides into the base of the holder on the opposite side to the padlock was only in a few centimetres , meaning it could be prised out by a thief .
To remedy this , I screwed some half-inch screwed rod into the end of the top bar . It was a tight fit but I made it even more secure by adding loads of Araldite into the tube end and onto the threads while screwing the rod in . The rod goes into the square tubing by 150mm and extends out by 150mm .
Also , I heard of a family towing their van through the outback to a remote area . When they arrived , they discovered that a wayward rock had bounced up from their tyre and hit the water drain tap on one water tank . It had snapped off the tap , draining their tank and leaving them with only a partly full secondary tank .
Admittedly , there is a very remote chance of this happening , but if it did happen , it could be disastrous . I alleviated the issue by adding a shield on the leading side of the tap made of aluminium plate . I attached it to the metal tank guard with a few rivets .
