A couple weeks ago , I hitched up the new Crusader CRV Esperance . As I hauled it along the highway , exploring a few gravel tracks and other secondary roads , it dawned on me how much I like compact caravans such as this .
Don ’ t get me wrong : I ’ m all for large , luxurious caravans – 22ft-plus rigs that will make you feel like outback royal . But I ’ m partial to the benefits of towing a smaller van . Sure , there isn ’ t as much internal living space as their larger counterparts , and there are more living comprises involved ; however , their lighter weight and shorter towing length appeal to me .
The obvious benefits include reduced fuel consumption and the storage of the van itself . But what about negotiating tight corners in holiday parks , or travelling along city roads or those times when you need to find a space large enough to pull over or turn around ?
As I ’ m sure you have , I ’ ve done all of that and more with large vans – and no worries . As long as you have your wits about you , there shouldn ’ t be a problem . But , frankly , the stress factor – at least for me – diminishes somewhat when it ’ s a small van on my towbar .
But at the end of the day it ’ s about getting out there – however you do that is a personal choice .
