Can you remember the first time you towed a caravan ? I don ’ t mind admitting that I was … nervous .
I was in my early 20s . I didn ’ t know then what I know now about safe towing , or even safe hitching . But I had a pretty good head on my shoulders and was confident that the rig would hold together . Which it did , fortunately !
The idea was to tow the van from Melbourne and along the Great Ocean Road to Apollo Bay . I ’ m sure I annoyed the following traffic as I drove deliberately slower than normal . And my eyes may have spent more time on my mirrors than on the road ahead .
As I began down the Great Ocean Road , I noticed a bouncing effect on the towball . I pulled over and the problem was obvious : the towball on my borrowed vehicle was missing the spring washer and the nut had loosened considerably .
I was able to tighten the nut and drive cautiously to the nearest town , where I bought a new towball complete with spring washer .
The lesson here : your towing setup is only as strong as your weakest link . Towing , especially for the first time , can be daunting . So we ’ ve set-out in this issue to describe what to expect during those initial attempts , and offer some advice . We hope you find it useful .
