RUBBER HITS THE ROAD

WORDS : PHILIP LORD

THERE ARE MANY OPTIONS WHEN CHOOSING A 4WD TYRE . HERE ’ S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW …

Getting new tyres for your 4WD tow vehicle can be fun because there are so many replacement options out there . You ’ ll be more able to cater for your needs with a tyre that is likely to improve on what might be some very ordinary tyres on your rig now .
It can be confusing looking for new 4WD tyres though , because they come in so many different brands and tread patterns . It can be a minefield and the chances of getting the wrong tyre are high if you don ’ t know or are not shown the right direction .
As you have probably already realised , tyres for any 4WD costs much more than for a passenger car . Once you ’ ve spent your hardearned money , it ’ s very hard to return tyres if you don ’ t like them .
So how can you make the best 4WD tyre choice to ensure you ’ re not throwing your money away ?
Given that you probably own a caravan , odds are that you like to do a bit of travel and possibly some offroading too , either towing or solo day trips without the van . You probably don ’ t want highperformance tyres that will suit track days , but maybe you don ’ t want fat , chunky mud tyres either . How do you decide which 4WD tyre is right for your rig ?
Offroad tyres are a different breed compared to passenger car tyres . They are therefore broadly classified into three main categories : Highway Terrain ( H / T ), All Terrain ( A / T ) and Mud Terrain ( M / T ).
