You might have heard of tyres with ‘ Light Truck ’ or ‘ LT ’ construction . A Light Truck tyre is simply a tyre carcass that tyre manufacturers design to be strong enough to cope with the loads carried by light trucks . Utes , for example , have LT tyres as standard , given their load-carrying role . However , it is important to note that LT tyres , which often will have deeper tread than passenger tyres , does not necessarily have chunky , open offroad-tyre pattern .
A tyre with LT construction can vary in how strong it actually is , and therefore how well it will resist punctures when driving offroad . The best way to tell is to confirm how many sidewall plies the tyre has – the more the better . Usually four plies in the tread area and two in the sidewalls is a good start . Eight or 10-ply ratings are best for resisting stone damage and sidewall staking .
The good news is this tyre design – with more sidewall plies for better puncture resistance and with heavier carcass construction – can also be bought in an A / T pattern . So a Light Truck A / T tyre is the best compromise tyre for a 4WD destined to do lots of miles as an offroad tourer .
As a bonus , in a 4WD A / T pattern , they tend to have deep tread so they last longer , have better mudclearing properties and puncture resistance than a non-LT tyre .
