RV FEATURE
The ZOLEO satellite messenger provides a wide range of benefits , while the entry level Spot Gen3 , which is cheaper , provides basic services .
The entry-level SPOT Gen3 is an example of a satellite messenger that only provides basic functions : ‘ SOS ’, ‘ OK ’ and ‘ HELP ’ messages . It ’ s worth researching the differences between the various satellite messengers available . For example , the SPOT Gen3 will only send an SOS alert , while the ZOLEO will allow you to communicate with emergency responders during any rescue operation . Being able to communicate the nature of your emergency is beneficial , since it will allow the rescue team to have the right equipment for the situation .
An important consideration : satellite messengers are an ongoing expense – they require a subscription , but the actual cost will depend on the level of service you require and flexible plans are often available , along with lowcost suspension plans for when the device is not in use . The basic ZOLEO plan , for example , costs $ 32 per month , which includes 25 satellite messages , unlimited cellular and wi-fi messages , satellite SOS alerts , and access to the GEOS 24 / 7 SOS service .
To my mind , satellite messengers are almost the perfect tool for remote-area communications and peace of mind . However , not all will provide SOS messaging which , to me , would be a crucial factor in my decision-making .
The main potential drawback : the fact you can ’ t actually phone for non-emergency assistance . Say you are out of mobile phone range and just need a tow – it would be difficult to get a truck out via SMS alone ; however , you could text a family member or friend , who could in turn contact one on your behalf .
