RV FEATURE
Towing safety has come a long way . Twenty years ago , you ’ d have a weight distribution hitch and perhaps an anti-sway bar to help level and stabilise your rig . But through AL-KO , one of the largest suppliers to Australia ’ s RV industry , technology finally caught up with caravans .
First , it was AL-KO Electronic Stability Control , a technological solution to sway the likes of which had not been seen before . Now , AL-KO has launched Tow Assist , a comprehensive towing safety package that includes ABS braking , Sway Mitigation , Evasive Action Control and even an inbuilt digital towing odometer via an app .
Tow Assist was a collaboration between AL-KO and Melbournebased Bosch , along with US-based Dexter , that was years in the making . The public received a taste of how it worked at the Victorian Caravan & Camping Supershow , which was held at Sandown Racecourse in May this year .
THE TEST
I wasn ’ t particularly nervous when I climbed into the AL-KO Tow Assist demonstration vehicle . I ’ d been a passenger in a similar demonstration for AL-KO ESC . But I was very keen to see first-hand how this technology might benefit Australian caravanners .
