RV FEATURE
This is the first time that Australian caravanners have been able to access combined anti-lock braking / sway mitigation technology , and take-up of the system throughout the industry is expected to be high . JB Caravans was the first manufacturer to offer Tow Assist to customers .
The system , which is based on automotive technology developed by Bosch decades ago , involves an ECU that is mounted on the centreline of the trailer ’ s axle set . A ‘ plug and play ’ wiring harness is included , as are sensors that need to be fitted to each braked wheel .
It can be powered either by the van ’ s house battery or the vehicle ’ s battery , with a light at the front of the van indicating the status of the system .
Caravanning comes with inherent risks , both to life and property . Of course , we take action to minimise those risks , whether it ’ s through the fitment of various towing aids or simply by educating ourselves on best towing practices .
Having experienced its benefits first-hand , fitting Tow Assist is , to me , a no-brainer . While technology such as this does not replace the need for correct and sensible loading of the van or other safe and legally-required towing practices , it is not hyperbole to say it might one day save your life . Would you buy a new car without ABS ?
