BUYING USED
Here we ’ re looking at the two diesel-engined Land Cruiser 100s available , the naturally aspirated 1HZ 4.2L six-cylinder diesel and the 1HD-FTE 4.2L six-cylinder turbodiesel .
This was a vehicle that time has proven as a solid offroader , tourer and tow vehicle , with solid amounts of power and torque , good economy , a comfortable , spacious interior , and a solid , stable towing platform . With its Toyota reputation for build quality , reliability and easy spare parts availability , the 100 Series is a popular vehicle in town and country .
While the naturally aspirated diesel six was a bit sluggish when laden , the 1HD-FTE turbodiesel had no such problems . It performed well , with a solid midrange and minimal turbo lag .
TOWING
If you are doing lots of heavy-duty towing , you would have to give the 1HZ a miss ( unless it has had a good aftermarket turbo upgrade ) and go for the more powerful turbodiesel 1HD-FTE . Of course , the petrol V8 is also an option , but given its thirst when towing we ’ re only looking at the more fuelefficient diesels here .
The Land Cruiser rides well on rough roads ( particularly the independentfront suspension model ) and can be a very good tourer .
It works well offroad , too , even though purists won ’ t like the independent front suspension version for its less durable , less articulated offroad angles or the standard spare wheel placement under the rear , which impedes departure angle .
It has good clearance , good gearing , massive rear wheel articulation and a relatively supple ride .
The 100 Series offers a solid , dependable towing platform .
