MODEL VARIATIONS
There were many detail changes to the 100 Series through its production run , which spanned nearly nine years .
From its introduction in 1998 until October 2000 , the 96kW / 285Nm 1HZ naturally aspirated sixcylinder was the only diesel engine offered . The Standard-spec 1HZ diesel came with part-time 4WD only , while the GXL came with a full-time 4WD system .
In October 2000 , the 1HD-FTE 4.2L turbodiesel was introduced , as the 4.7L petrol V8 was dropped from the range . Like the V8 petrol before it , this new turbodiesel was only available with an independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering . A live front axle 100 Series with diesel engine could only be had as the 1HZ diesel in standard or GXL grade .
The 151kW / 430Nm 1HD-FTE was only available in GXL or GXV grade . Both 1HZ and 1HD-FTE Standard and GXL came with five-speed manual and optional four-speed automatic ( standard on GXV ).
From October 2002 , the 1HZ was available as a manual-only while the 1HD-FTE was offered with a new five-speed auto option in place of the four-speed unit . The two diesel engines were modified to meet Euro Step II emission requirements , although outputs remained unchanged .
The 1HZ diesel was upgraded with an exhaust gas recirculation system and a timing control valve for its fuel injection pump to reduce nitrogen emissions . The turbodiesel engine was fitted with lead-free intake valve seats and the engine mounts were improved to suit the new fivespeed auto transmission . A drain line was added to the intercooler .
