Two Brisbane-based engineers have launched a smartphone-based wheel bearing monitoring system .

‘ Wheel Sensei ’ came about following their own wheel bearing failure . The pair decided to develop a digital solution that could provide travellers with the information needed to avoid bearing failure and travel with peace of mind when towing their van .

Wheel Sensei co-founder Jason LaPorte said the product provided drivers with real-time insights into bearing conditions while driving .

“ We had no way of knowing our bearings would fail , because there was simply no product on the market that could accurately monitor wheel bearings at the time ,” he said .

The product uses wireless sensors to send real-time notifications to the driver ’ s phone , alerting them to any bearing temperature changes and prompting them to take action before a wheel bearing failure can occur .

Wheel bearing failures can have numerous causes , including sand and water infiltration , and poor installation . Temperature changes were a key indicator of impending failure , Wheel Sensei said .
