I recently sold my van . The buyers – lovely people – were new to the game . They arrived to pick it up , but their new 4WD didn ’ t have a brake controller fitted . They simply didn ’ t know it needed one , delaying the handover until an auto-electrician could sort it out .

For me , this ‘ incident ’ encapsulated the need for outlets such as this one to continually educate the vanning public . No , caravanning is not simply a matter of dropping the coupling onto the towball of any old 4WD and hitting the road .

However , for every newcomer , there are two or three old hands . And no doubt , they ’ ve made some impressive modifications to their rigs . In fact , when we were in Nagambie , Vic , recently for the Hilltop Caravans National Gathering , almost every vanner there had personalised their rig in one amazing way or another .

We ’ re featuring a swag of these modifications in this issue . As lovely as a new van is when it leaves the factory , it takes a little time and use to discover ways to make it truly suitable for you . I suspect there will be an idea or two within these pages that you ’ ll find useful .
