When preparing for a caravanning holiday , it ’ s very easy to get caught up in the excitement of it all , especially during the planning stages .
What gear are you going to take , what tourist attractions will you visit and what route will you follow ? All these things are the exciting and positive parts of the experience .
But what happens when that happy experience turns into a disaster ? How prepared will you be ? Perhaps we should spend some time thinking about that because , let me assure you , it is bound to happen one day .
If you ’ ve spent time in recent months perusing the caravanning and camping groups on Facebook , you will have seen quite a few stories of people whose adventures had turned into nightmares thanks to the flooding in Queensland and northern New South Wales . I lost count of how many pictures I saw of caravans submerged in water , flipped onto their sides , even some left perched on top of nearby buildings .
Road block at Salmon Gums .
The stories of what happened to these poor people were equally as tragic as the pictures . Many were caught completely off guard and only through either good luck or good management were they able to survive .
This month , I want to share with you the other disasters we and some of our friends have had to endure in recent times while travelling around this wonderful country . This is not an exercise in seeking pity . Rather , we want to give you an idea of the sorts of things that you may have to deal with if the unthinkable happens .
Even the best prepared traveller can be caught off guard by mother nature s fury .
