A large paddock out back is a perfect place to pitch your tent or set-up your camper or caravan . The paddock is dotted with sheep and situated on the Dargo River – find a spot in the shade and perhaps dip your feet in the river . Just incredible . Motel / cabin accommodation is available too .
While in Dargo , why not check out the Dargo Heritage Museum ? Open by request and a short walk from the hotel , this interesting heritage destination provides an insight into the difficulty of life in the High Country during the gold mining era .
It ’ s hard to describe Dargo , which is one of the most remote country towns in Victoria . It is a town of true rural hospitality , a hub for deer hunters in search of sambar , fisherfolk in search of brown trout in the Dargo and Wonnangatta rivers , or bushwalkers in search of the state ’ s most breathtaking views .
There ’ s no shortage of free-camps in the area , too . To be honest , you can just follow your nose and , before long , you ’ ll find a secluded slice of bush paradise . Italian Flat , along the Upper Dargo Road , is a case in point . This large , flat , wellshaded and grassy area on the Dargo River is perfect for trailers and tents – and it ’ s just a short drive from town .
RIVER CROSSINGS
We visited Dargo as part of a test of three JB caravans : the Dirt Roader , the Gator and the Scorpion Sting . Al-Ko , in conjunction with JB Caravans , asked us to produce a series called ‘ AL-KO Outback Warriors ’ in which we ’ d torture test AL-KO ’ s suspension and the JB vans . Hauling the offroad Gator and Scorpion through a deep water crossing seemed a good way to do both .
We were in Dargo to put three JB vans to the test .
