FREEDOM CAMP OF THE MONTH
There were still a few campers around but a couple of vans were leaving when we dropped into Sandy Creek Pub .
The pub is not far from the Cunningham Highway , near Warwick in Queensland ' s Darling Downs . Camping is available in the grassy paddock next door , where you ’ ll also find some farm animals . Enter via a gate .
The site is for patrons only , with a donation for charity and a fee for a shower . But it is a great freedom camp – the only other options for campers and caravanners in Warwick are caravan parks .
You can stay here up to 72 hours and feel free to bring your pets . There is ample room for big rigs and tents are welcome , too .
Showers , toilets , water and mobile coverage are available . Fires and generators are allowed , too . There ' s even more facilities : picnic tables , playground , shade and views !
Camps Australia Wide travellers who have visited this freedom camp have found the publican and locals to be very friendly , and they enjoyed the hot food and cold beer . They describe it as a “ classic country pub ” that is “ fabulous ”.
What do you think of the sign about this free camp above ? To us at Camps Australia Wide , it is a given to support any business where we camp for free – especially if we want businesses like this hotel to continue to offer a free campsite .
A camper recently told us that pub stays are not ‘ free stays ’ – you are compelled to buy a drink or meal for your patch of land .
However , we are glass-half-full people . When we arrived to camp here , we reasoned that we were planning to eat out anyway , or socialise at the bar . So the free site is a bonus ! Plus ( and it is a big one ) there ' s no washing up !
And remember : shut the gate !
