Second , the impact on the economy would be enormous . How many people interested in taking up the caravanning lifestyle would simply choose a tent instead if they were required to go through government-mandated rigmarole ?
I ’ m no economist ; however , it seems to me that it would knock a zero or two off the balance sheets of manufacturers , not to mention the affect to the communities that rely on tourism dollars to keep going .
The better answer , I believe , is continued education . To some , that might sound like a platitude . To me , it ’ s the only solution . All motorists , whether towing a caravan or not , should become invested in their safety and that of others . It ’ s about assuming that responsibility yourself , rather than having a nanny tell you what you can and can ’ t do .
It begins with understanding that towing a caravan is not the same as towing a 6x4 garden trailer to the tip . It requires the driver to source accurate information about weights and ratings , etc ., and having the sense to adhere to those requirements . Such information is readily available , after all , whether it ’ s from this magazine or the website of your state ’ s road traffic authority .
It ’ s commonly understood that accidents usually occur when drivers ask ‘ too much ’ of their vehicles and equipment , or when they push themselves beyond their own limitations . They also occur when people disregard the rules – but this is when we return to the argument of personal responsibility . No licence or endorsement will count for much when a driver shirks it .
What are your thoughts ? Should caravanners be licensed to tow ? Email info @ gorv . com . au to let us know !
