Two thirds of road deaths occur on rural roads , according to research by the Australian Road Safety Foundation ( ARSF ).
ARSF CEO Russell White said the most concerning research was the number of respondents who admitted to bad driving behaviours , as well as being unprepared , when driving in rural areas , a combination he said was ‘ lethal ’.
“ The research is showing a shocking lack of resilience , which is essential on rural roads , along with very lax attitudes towards being safe in these high-risk environments ,” Mr White said .
September was ‘ Rural Road Safety month ’ and , with over 89 per cent of camping trips occurring in rural areas , Caravan Industry Association of Australia joined ARSF to highlight the importance of understanding your RV setup , including towing and weights , as well as fatigue management and patience .
“ All road users have a responsibility to road safety when using our roads . We encourage our camping families to be patient and not rush ,” Caravan Industry Association of Australia ’ s Keelan Howard said .
