RV FEATURE
There are two readily available wind deflectors in Australia that are designed for caravanners . These are the AEROPlus and the Stealth Deflector . Both do the job and have their advantages , so I decided to purchase both and test to see which one worked best for my needs .
My real life evaluation involved me making the same trip from Melbourne to Apollo Bay , Vic , with each deflector fixed appropriately to my 4WD as I towed my caravan . I then compared the fuel savings that each offered , and paid particular attention to the towing experience .
I make this Melbourne-to-Apollo Bay tip regularly , which gave me a good baseline in terms of fuel consumption and road familiarity .
AEROPLUS
During my first trip with the AERO Plus , the improvement in towing stability was immediately noticeable – both the tow vehicle and caravan felt more stable , especially when being passed by large trucks or during overtaking manoeuvres .
The saving in fuel consumption came in at just under 2L / 100km when compared to towing without this deflector .
The AEROPlus comes with universal brackets to suit most cross bars / roof racks .
All in all , the AEROPlus does a great job . Upon my arrival at Apollo Bay , I unhitched the caravan to explore the Great Ocean Road . With the deflector still attached , there was a bit more wind noise than usual , which is a trait common to all wind deflectors .
Removing the AEROPlus involves undoing a number of small bolts , which can be fiddly . However , it comes with a universal fitting kit and will suit most cross bars / roof racks . The universal brackets that come with the kit allow for some adjustment of the wind deflection angle , but it can ’ t be ‘ fine-tuned ’ as such .
