What if I told you that you now needed a licence to tow a caravan ? Don ’ t worry – that ’ s not on the cards , that I ’ m aware of , but I have seen the question popping up more and more on social media .
As a result , we ’ ve been thinking about the pros and cons .
September was ‘ Rural Road Safety month ’. According to research by the Australian Road Safety Foundation , motorists show a ‘ shocking lack of resilience ’ to driving on rural roads ( see page 38 ). So , would a licence to tow help ?
From where I sit , the idea seems unworkable . But I will concede there are some valid arguments for the idea of requiring a licence or endorsement to tow a van . In fact , the UK has had a towing licensing regime in place for many years , though it has been recently revised to something a little more … realistic .
In our post-covid lives , with more people hitting the road than ever , a much better proposal would be for the government to provide rebates on towing courses run by accredited operators . If this was somehow linked to a reduction in insurance premiums , the government would be on a winner .
The very fact we need a Rural Road Safety month suggests something isn ’ t working .
