TOWING TUITION
I ’ ve just read your article ‘ Licensed to Tow ’. I have been towing caravans and boats since I was 19 years of age . I ’ m currently 70 years young . During my years of towing I never had an issue , simply because I was very aware of the different state road rules and towing weights of my vehicle and vehicle being towed .
Since the pandemic , I have seen a large number of people of all ages with or without families towing caravans . It has been surprising and frightening to see how many haven ’ t any knowledge of the road rules for towing a caravan or any knowledge of the weights of their van or requirements of the tow vehicle . I ’ m seeing this more and more during school holidays .
Like you , I agree a licence is not the answer for the reasons you have pointed out in your article . However , I strongly believe prior to towing a caravan , the driver and , in some cases , the observer , should be compelled to undergo towing tuition and perhaps a certificate of compliance issued at the completion of the course .
Earlier this year , my wife and I attended a refresher reversing course . We did a half-day course and I found it most informative . The company is RACQ-approved . This company services the Brisbane , Gold Coast , Sunshine Coast , Logan and Ipswich areas . You can either go to them or they will make arrangements to meet you at a location suitable for you .
This company does it all : road rules , weights , etc . It is called Caravan Towing Tuition ( 0400 769 680 ). I have responded to your article not to plug the company , which I highly recommend , but it would be nice to know others with caravans have the same knowledge of the rules to make all our travelling safe .
