SAVED BY A TOWING COURSE
My wife and I started caravanning in 2018 . It was our first van purchase and we bought a Jurgens Lunagazer , which we still have . We drove to Melbourne to do an approved towing course before picking up the van .
It was a very good decision because not only did we learn the technicalities of towing and checking weights , etc ., we also learned tips and tricks from the instructors and several other people doing a refresher course .
We picked the van up from Newcastle and headed to Brisbane . On the very first day we had strong crosswinds , bushfire smoke and then torrential rain . If we had not done the course , I ' m not sure how we ' d have handled the bad conditions . While the conditions were a little disturbing , both of us had enough grounding from the course to remain calm and drive safely .
I don ' t think a towing licence is necessary , but I do believe that doing a towing course should be the first priority for anybody considering taking up caravanning .

IN FAVOUR OF LICENCES
Yes , I think caravanners should require a licence to tow . I tow a large caravan and I find it is easy with very good anti-sway bars and the correct speed . I have seen some disasters waiting to happen as they overtake me when I am in the car . Licences have been talked about for too long , but now there are many more caravans on the road .
