RV FEATURE
Having said that , if you know the wind will get over the 25-30km / h mark , you should consider putting in your awning early to avoid it being damaged by any wind gusts .
If you can ’ t get a site with a slab or you ’ re staying at a free camp , use a quality ground sheet . This will allow all the mud and dirt to pass through to the ground underneath . It will also provide a barrier between you and the wet ground around you .
GETTING READY TO LEAVE
It can be very handy to start packing up early and not leave it all to the morning of your departure . We like to get as much packed up the day before we leave , especially if we know it will be raining in the morning . There is nothing worse than packing up wet camping gear .
It is also a good idea to have a set of dry clothes ready to change into after you ’ ve packed everything up . If you ’ re travelling in a caravan or motorhome , you can get dressed inside just before leaving . If you ’ re in a camper , you may be able to change into your dry clothes in the amenities block .
Give yourself plenty of time to get home . Remember everyone will be trying to get home at the same time as you and the roads will likely be chaotic . If the weather is bad , it will be even more dangerous . If you can , leave early and drive safely .
HOT TIPS
Season any canvas before you leave . If you have a new camper trailer or tent , it ’ s likely it will need to be seasoned before you use it . This involved erecting the canvas section and giving it a good wetting down with a hose . This allows the canvas and the stitching to swell up and settle , preventing further leaks . Make sure the canvas is packed away when it is completely dry to avoid any mould formation . That will ruin your holiday .
Keep a waterproof poncho handy . No one likes setting up or packing away when it ’ s raining but the chances are you will have to at some time . To keep yourself as dry as possible , wear a waterproof poncho . These fold up into a very small parcel and can be stored anywhere handy . They can be purchased from most camping stores .
