If ever I needed to be reminded of the importance of using the correct tyres for the job , it was during filming of our new TV show .
There we were , on a beautiful private property east of Melbourne , with vans of all shapes and sizes . Victoria had been subjected to horrible flooding in recent weeks ; however , we were experiencing a few days of incredible , blissful sun . The grass had dried … but , as you we all know , that can be deceptive , especially after weeks of hard rain .
The first few caravans that we towed on the grounds churned up the surface layer of dry dirt . By the time we were finished , we were faced with multiple pits of mud .
While more than one van got bogged during this caper , it became painfully obvious how effective mud terrain tyres really were – especially when we tackled those grounds with a vehicle fitted only with highway tyres .
However , sometimes the conditions are so bad that not even muddies will help – one 4WD and caravan combination became bogged to the axles ! All the traction boards in the world would not get these vehicles back on dry ground – and believe me , we tried ! A winch and crossed fingers saved the day .
Choose the terrain – and your tyres – carefully .
