Well , another year draws to a close . As I write , my brain is beginning to wander to Victoria ’ s Ninety Mile Beach , where I have a little bit of land and love to retreat to as often as possible . Long days on the beach , barbecues and a few beers around the fire at night . To me , that sounds like a merry Christmas .

Since selling my camper , I ’ ve been doing more and more tent camping . If it has been a while for you , I highly recommend trying it some time . What I have found to be most interesting is how I have been able to make do with the basics . Tenting almost inevitably means packing less stuff – it ’ s not as though tents have overhead lockers you can stuff full with bits and pieces .

Nothing beats the comfort of a good caravan , but when every kilo of payload counts , it ’ s worth stripping out what you don ’ t need . Sometimes , we pack things ‘ just in case ’, when in reality you could easily leave those items behind – something that tent camping has really driven home for me .
