LETTERS FROM THE ROAD

OKAY ON THE OODNADATTA
I would like to know if I can take my semi-offroad caravan along the Oodnadatta Track ? I am planning on travelling around September onwards .
Greg Beale
Hi Greg , as general advice only , I would say that a well-built semioffroad caravan should be capable on the Oodnadatta Track . There are plenty of corrugations but it ’ s not ‘ hard core ’ 4WD territory . Be sure to wrap any exposed A-frame and under-body components in a protective material ( carpet offcuts work well ); otherwise , the gravel will shoot them to pieces . – Ed
GREAT FUEL FIGURES !
I have just towed a van for 2600km with a D-MAX . I thought you might be interested in my fuel consumption of 15.87L / 100km ( 6.3km / L ).

That ’ s a great result ! It ’ s even better than what we achieved during our testing – Ed
GTM CONFUSION
I would like to know why those three letters , GTM , are needed ? It ' s an absolutely confusing piece of non-information where we acknowledge the only recognisable three : Tare , ATM and ball weight ! GTM has been a confusion to the vast number of newbies .
Even I got confused when I bought our van , forgetting years of truck and coach driving .
It ’ s just not needed these days . John Day
MANDATORY TOWING COURSE ?
Having carefully read your article regarding a towing licence , I would like to add my two bobs ’ worth . I feel that the short answer is that anyone wishing to begin caravanning should , at the very least , be compelled to undergo a compulsory towing course .
That would achieve a modicum of required skills in the towing of several tonnes of equipment , sadly lacking on our roads at this time .
+ D-MAX FUEL TEST !
