FREEDOM CAMP OF THE MONTH
It is worth the little drive off the highway to find a modest little camp area , high on a hill . And in the case of this spot , east of Gravesend , NSW , the views of the Gywdir River below were well worth the effort .
We had this free riverside camp to ourselves , except for the hare who hopped off as we arrived . Facilities include a large covered picnic shelter with tables , a barbecue and a fire pit . Bring your own water .
As you swim or fish in the river , you ’ ll have views of two bridges . This was such a peaceful spot , we loved our cool-down in the water !
This site is suitable for all vehicles and camping . Owners of big rigs : note that there is a bridge to drive under on the road in . Take care in wet weather .
Gravesend also has two other freedom camps : the Gravesend Hotel ( known as the Gravo Pub ) for self-contained vehicles , and a donation site with toilets at the Gravesend Recreational Reserve . All three sites are pet-friendly .
GRAVESEND FREEDOM CAMP
You ' ll find this spot 3.5km east of Gravesend , NSW , heading towards Warialda ( another terrific town for campers in the beautiful Gwydir Region . Look for the track on the north side of the bridge .
