This month , we set out to show once and for all the truth behind the common belief that knocking a bit of speed off when you ’ re towing a caravan will lead to improved fuel economy .

The methodology required two tests . The first saw me towing a van at a top speed of 100km / h along Melbourne ’ s Monash Freeway . For the second test , I towed the same van on the same roads at 80km / h as my top speed .

Now , I am keenly aware that travelling at 80km / h in a 100km / h zone would be frowned upon by many of you , and fair enough . It ’ s not ideal . But to be clear , in most part of Australia , there ’ s no specific law forbidding motorists from driving ‘ too slowly ’.

However , there is a rule concerning driving significantly below the speed limit – “ a driver must not unreasonably obstruct the path of another driver or a pedestrian .”

While this appears open to interpretation , rest assured that for this test , traffic conditions were such that nobody was unreasonably obstructed .

In any event , the results of this test were far beyond anything I anticipated . I won ’ t spoil things here – read our report or watch the video . I think you ’ ll be surprised too .
