RATTLE IN THE RECEIVER
I own and tow with a Triton twin cab . We bought our van secondhand and the seller supplied me his tow hitch , all set to the van with the load levellers , etc . The hitch is 50mm .
The factory-supplied Mitsubishi tow pack has a 53mm receiver . The hitch has always rattled about but obviously sits solid when the van is on . My research finds all hitches are 50mm .
I spoke to a tow pack supplier / fitter some time back and was advised tow hitches are designed to move about inside the receivers . I recently spoke to a spare parts salesman at a Mitsubishi dealership regarding the difference in sizes . He was unable to explain it .
Observing mates ’ setups , I noticed their hitch / receivers fit snugly .
I ' ve searched the internet but I ' m unable to find any information . Can you give me some explanation ? Is the towbar fitter correct ? I find it odd that a Mitsubishi receiver is 53mm and the Mitsubishi hitch is 50mm !

Good question , Syd . I have had the reverse experience , where the receiver was a millimetre or two too tight – I had to bash the hitch with a hammer to get it in and out . But it isn ’ t uncommon to have a bit of play between the hitch and the receiver . Does your receiver have an anti-rattle bolt underneath ? Tighten it up to reduce the play and rattling sound .
On a related , but irrelevant note , ‘ sleeve reducers ’ are available , which adapt a 2.5in receiver to 2in ; however , it ’ s mostly used for American vehicles that have a 63mm / 2.5in receiver to make them suitable for Aussie hitches . – Ed
