I was at the GoRV stand at this month ’ s Victorian Caravan , Camping and Touring Supershow , chatting with show-goers , when one reader asked about the best way to size up your battery needs . Essentially , how do you go about establishing the battery capacity that you ’ ll require in your van in order to power your various appliances and devices ?
Sure , you could just bung a 100Ah deep-cycle battery in your caravan and pop a portable solar panel into the sun . This approach would more or less work for ‘ casual ’ caravanners , people who travel locally here and there , and are happy provided they can run their lights and recharge their phones .
However , as we become more and more dependent on technology – yes , even when we ’ re travelling – it stands to reason that our power needs change accordingly . In this issue , full-time caravanner Marty Ledwich has done a great job explaining how to suss out your 12V needs . It ’ s worth a read , especially if you ’ re new to the world of caravanning .
Meanwhile , I have had a new portable lithium power station and solar panels arrive at my house . These devices are so useful , so stay tuned – I ’ ll tell you all about it soon .
